An anti-abortion group with followers from across the national are in the Capitol City the entire week. Their hope is the only abortion clinic in the city will shut down.
Wednesday is the one day a week abortion services are offered, so protestors were out in full force on both sides of the issue. There were about 100 anti-abortion protestors who started gathering around 5 in the morning. They come from all across the country, part of the faith-based group Operation Save America. Their message is one of pro-life.
But there’s also out-of-state representation for the pro-choice movement. Reps with the national Feminist Majority Foundation have been working with Reproductive Health Services. The facility offers different family planning services throughout the week and Wednesday’s the one day they offer abortions. So protestors came out early to try to get their message across.
Cal Zastrow, Volunteer Operation Save America said, “God’s word says that ‘religion that god our father accepts as pure and faultless so go after widows, orphans and their distress.’ And right in there there’s orphans getting their heads cut off and we invite more people to come on out peacefully, lovingly and help stop the shedding of innocent blood.”
Duvergne Gaines, Director National Clinic Access Project, Feminist Majority Foundation said, “you can imagine the stress of a woman coming in whether it’s a shot of Depoprovera or an abortion or an ultrasound, to be met with 80 loud aggressive protestors coming at her vehicle, you know it’s terrifying. And it’s a terrible thing what they do.”
Pro-life supporters say they are prepared for the group to be protesting outside of a Birmingham Planned Parenthood tomorrow.
