From the West Alabama Newsroom– The city of Selma is in search of a new police chief after current chief William Riley submits his resignation.
Selma Police Chief William Riley is calling it quits after more than 7 years on the job. Riley is leaving to become the next chief of police of Inkster, Michigan — just outside of Detroit.
He says one of his proudest accomplishments is the job that’s been done dealing with crime in Selma.
“Had we had another 15 or 20 more officers we would be in the Top 20 Safest Cities in Alabama no doubt in my mind,” said Riley.
“I thought he did a good job and offered leadership,” said Selma Mayor George Evans.
“In the position that you’re a police officer and you have to make decisions about people’s lives, you’re not going to always please everybody, no question about that, but if you try to be consistent and fair, I think that’s what important.”
Evans said the search to find a new police chief is already underway.
Riley’s last day on the job is August 3rd.
