Escaped Inmate from Draper Prison in Elmore Is Recaptured

The Alabama Department of Corrections says it has recaptured an inmate who had escaped from Draper prison in Elmore.
Prison officials say Roberto Talabera, 37, was recaptured by corrections officials after an intensive four-hour search.
Investigators say a K-9 tracking unit from Draper, with help from several law enforcement agencies, tracked Talabera approximately four miles from the prison. Â They say Talabera tried to hide in a field of kudzu near Highway 14 and Coosada Road in Elmore County. Â
Prison officials say Talabera was taken into custody without incident.
Officers from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Elmore County Sheriff’s Office, and the Wetumpka Police Department responded to the escape and assisted in the recapture.
Officials say Talabera was assigned to a farming detail on the facility’s property on State Route 143 when he escaped around 10 a.m.Â
Talabera is serving a 20-year sentence on a January 2008 robbery conviction in Madison County. He and an accomplice were convicted of robbing four convenience stores at gunpoint in 2007. Â
