Teaching kids how to handle conflict in a way that doesn’t lead to violence was front and center in Montgomery.

The inaugural “Let’s Talk, Don’t Shoot” seminar took place today at the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl.

More than 300 students in 7th through 12 grade took part.  The seminar was sponsored by the Montgomery Police Department and featured several speakers including police officers and those who overcame a childhood of violence to succeed in life.

The seminar’s goal was to teach kids better ways to handle conflict with each other.

Many students say they see on a daily basis how their fellow classmates are quick to turn to violence to resolve problems and not conversation.

Police hope to bring the students back later this year for a follow-up seminar.  In the meantime, volunteer mentors will be spending time with students over the next several months.
