It’s almost time to go back to school in Montgomery.
School superintendent Margaret Allen enters her second full school year as superintendent although she’s been with the schoool system in one role or the other for over 30 years.
Allen says she is confident students are getting a quality education as they return to class. She says she and her staff are constantly reviewing teaching programs and methods for the system’s 31,000 students.
She says besides continued budget woes, one of the biggest issues still facing M-P-S is perception.
Allen says it takes the community as a whole, not just school officials to change that perception.
“Every year a cadre of community members go into our schools. The meet with us and they say to us Oh, it’s not like what we thought,” Allen said.
Allen also credits a good working relationship with the Board of Education for making progress in improving education.
“We have some down days and some up days, but overall I can still walk into a room and greet and be very respectful of each board member,” Allen said.
As the new school year approaches Allen herself will be trying new ways to communicate directly to parents. She is now officially on Twitter.
The start of the new school year is set for Thursday, August 13th.
