A popular Montgomery venue needs your help. The Sanctuary, located downtown, was burglarized last week and now those with the century old gothic chapel are raising money to recoup what was stolen and repair what was damaged.

The suspects broke a beautiful stained glass window and made their way in, stealing hundreds of dollars worth of sound equipment.

John Veres is now picking up the pieces, literally, after the Sanctuary in downtown Montgomery was robbed.

“Unfortunately our alarm system did not sound.”

Veres serves as the Executive Director of Helicity Montgomery, a non-profit organization that manages the Sanctuary. Robbers busted a stained glass window to gain entrance, and stole electronics, like speakers.

“Certainly higher utilities are a factor that we’re going to have to face this month, he explained.”

Constructed in the late 1800’s and tucked away in Montgomery’s Cottage Hill Historic District, the Sanctuary serves as a multipurpose venue. It’s not only used as a church, but also a theatre, a concert hall and plays host to art shows. Veres says he’s trying not to let the robbery bring morale down.

“Our goal is to get enough fundraising as a center to stay in operation where we’re able to grant this space to these community organizations so they have a place to gather and organize free of charge but certainly when we have set backs like this, it does hurt our objective.”

Helicity Montgomery operates on a shoestring budget and can’t afford the damages they’ve acquired. But even so, Veres extends an olive branch to the perpetrators.

“We hope that you understand what we’re trying to do and make use of us. Instead of setting the whole community back, why not come participate and help lift the community up together?”
