V-A officials in Alabama say the benefits side of the Veteran’s Administration has seen a big improvement in service to veterans.

The Director the Montgomery Regional VA Benefits Office, Cory Hawthorne outlined a series of improvements he says his office has seen in the last two years.

Among the improvements include a drop in the number of backlogged claims cases from a peak of nearly 12,000 in July of 2013 to just under 2,000 in July of this year.

The average number of days for a pending claim has also been reduced from 246 days in 2013 to 143 days at the current time.

Hawthorne says much of this is due to better training of employees, a faster paperless, electronic records system and renewed dedication to veterans.

“I’m gonna be here for a ling time.  I’m dedicated to making this office better each and everyday.  We are going to look for ways to be innovative within the law.  Do the right thing each and every time with each and every claim we adjudicate,” Hawthorn said.

The Regional office in Montgomery serves all of Alabama’s veterans and is one of 56 regional benefits offices nationwide.
