A passenger is stopped at a Birmingham airport today after a gun is found at a checkpoint.
Meanwhile TSA officials were in Montgomery this morning giving a demonstration on how to properly travel with a firearm.
TSA officials say the number of passengers traveling with a firearm is at an all time high, but there are specific directions you need to follow or you could face thousands of dollars in fines.
One of the most important things to know- if you bring a gun to the security checkpoint, you’ve done things all wrong. You need to declare your firearm at the ticketing counter. It needs to be in a hard sided case with locks. The ammunition must be secured in a box or magazine separate from the gun. Once it’s checked the gun will remain locked with the rest of luggage under the cabin.
Mark Howell, TSA Regional Spokesperson said, “TSA doesn’t want to infringe on anyone’s right to take a firearm when they travel. We just don’t want it accessible during the flight. So, it’s going to go in the under side of the aircraft. And nobody is going to have access to it.”
TSA officials say to make sure you check the gun laws of the state you’re traveling to.
