Cloverdale Eyesore Being Demolished

 The demolition is underway.
The apartments along the 1000 block of Felder Avenue have sat empty for at least the past year.
Neighbors say they are excited to see them finally coming down.
Â
“I’ve had several neighbors go, ‘they’re tearing them down! They’re tearing them down! Have you walked down there to see them?'” said Rebecca Duffy.
Â
The process hasn’t been an easy one for the City of Montgomery.Â
City councilman Arch Lee says it’s taken several years to get the apartment owners in California to comply.
Â
“Probably 3 or 4 years ago there was still communication with the owners, and she said she would rehab them and fix them up. Then the communication kinda ended there. So probably the last 2 years really struggled to make sure we notified all the people to notify trying to give them a chance to do something,” said Lee.
Â
Lee says the city deemed it an unsafe structure and sent letters out to everyone involved… And heard nothing back.
Even though it will come down, Lee says there won’t be much more they can do with it.
Â
“It’s still private property. It’s still there. What happens to it is up to I guess the bank or the property owner, but when that property is sold or if you get in negotiations, the city will be refunded or paid back our cost of having to take them down,” said Lee.
Â
Neighbors are grateful.
Â
John Eldridge says, “I’m glad to see they are getting out of here because obviously they are an eyesore and you can’t even walk on that side of the street on the sidewalk really because the grass is everywhere. I’m excited to see what they are going to do about it.” Â
Â
Â
“I’m really glad they are tearing it down. And dealing with it and stuff like that. We all as  neighbors want it to be a better and safer neighborhood,” said Duffy.
Â
Lee says he expects it to be several weeks before the demolition is finished.Â
