The Alabama chapter of the NAACP held a rally in Camden today, wanting to know more about the death of a man while he was in police custody two months ago.
Around 40 people gathered outside of the Wilcox County courthouse rallying for answers in 51-year-old Larry Jones’s death. Jones died after being arrested on domestic violence charges on June 14th. Wilcox County Sheriff Earnest Evans says Jones began complaining of chest pains after he was handcuffed. He was taken to a local hospital where he later died.
The NAACP chapter and Jones’s family want to know exactly what happened.
“More African Americans are dying at the hands of police,” says Bernard Simelton, President of the Alabama State Conference of the NAACP, “and this has to stop. We want to be here tonight to raise awareness and to hold them accountable for what they have done here.”
“What happened to my father no human being whose heart beats blood…deserves what happened,” says Kenyonika Hall, Jones’s daughter. “We just want to know why.”
The State Bureau of Investigations is looking into Jones’ death.
