New Confucius Classroom To Teach Wares Ferry Elementary Students

Elementary school students as early as kindergartners will be learning Chinese.

It’s part of an expanded partnership with AUM’s Confucius Institute and Wares Ferry Road Elementary School. Volunteers were teaching first and second graders already. But that will soon change, a grant will fund a full-time teacher to teach all K-5 students Chinese twice a week. They will learn language skills, customs and culture.

And school leaders hope starting them at an early age will also pay off outside of the classroom.

John Veres, Chancellor AUM said, “Also there’s an economic development aspect. We are getting to that tipping point with China where it’s cheaper for their manufacturers to manufacture there goods closer to their American consumers and if they are going to build factories in the US why not build them in Alabama.”

The new curriculum and classroom should be up and running by as soon as next week.
