AUBURN, AL — Auburn is heading to Baton Rouge to face the LSU Tigers, a team with one of the best running backs in the country in Leonard Fournette.
Safey Johnathan “Rudy” Ford was asked if it will be a difficult challenge to stop Fournette. He responded:
“That shouldn’t be difficult, that much of a challenge. We got a great front seven and even on the back end, we are all going to be ready to tackle. Our biggest thing is our energy level. As soon as we get off the bus, we have to be ready to attack. Don’t take anything lightly.”
The Auburn defense will have to have a good start once Fournette and the LSU faithful hear Ford’s comments on stopping the Heisman candidate.
But next to the LSU runner is Quarterback Brandon Harris, who called himself the best thrower in the SEC.
“I’m saying this humbly,” said Harris. “I’m the best throwing quarterback in the SEC and one of the top ones in the country. I feel like we can execute and throw down the field better than anyone else in the country.”
That wasn’t the case last season, when Harris made his first career start at Auburn, completing only three passes in a 41-7 loss. But Malzahn says that he’s seen Harris’s improvement.
“You can watch him in the game last Saturday and tell he’s more confident,” said Malzahn. “He was in a tough spot this time last year when he came in and started here for his first start. He’s a very good athlete and has a very good arm. He’s a good quarterback and you can tell he is more comfortable.”
The Auburn Tigers know how tough it will be to get comffortable playing in baton Rouge, one of the loudest environments in the country. But it was there in 2013 that Auburn came together as a team, and started a run to the championship game.
“After that game, it really defined who we were,” said Malzahn. “There are some similarities I would say with 2013, the difference is we know more about our older guys who have been in our offensive system for four years.”
Malzahn also announced that defensive back Josh Holsey is out for the rest of the year with a torn ACL. It’s the second time he has sustained that injury.
