Rylan Baker is almost like any other second grader; he is just a little more special than most. Chief Rabban Andy Compton knows Rylan’s story very well. “He was born, like I said with a cleft lip and palate and became a patient at Shriners hospital for children in Cincinnati,” Compton remembers. “And he’s been going up there ever since. He’s had multiple surgeries. He’s come along quite well.” “Right here was nothing but a hole,” Rylan says, holding his hand over half of his face. “When I was first born. And I’ve been going to Shriners since I was two months old.” Rylan and his siblings help out at events like the World’s Largest Peanut Boil in Crenshaw County to help give kids like him a better life. Chief Rabban Compton says the support from all over the country is amazing, and he cannot believe how far some people travel for a bag of peanuts. “On Friday, or Saturday… There’s a lady who came in, who comes through every year from Atlanta Georgia,” Compton says. “She’s from Destin, Florida. She stopped, bought two bags of peanuts. And about five minutes ago, she came back by on her way back to Atlanta and bought three more. Rylan calls himself a Shriner’s kid. Even though he has had some serious surgeries in his short life, he still has a lot of faith in the Shriner’s Hospital Doctors. He thinks they are the best doctors in the world. “They help, like, fifty percent of the kids in our country,” Rylan shares. “Like, they’re one of the most popular doctors in the world… Yeah, I think there’s only one doctor that’s better than them.” While we can’t verify Rylan’s statistics, we do know the Shriners Hospitals help a lot of children. Proceeds from the World’s Largest Peanut Boil support the Alcazar Shriners and help children like Rylan get the treatment they need.
