Record enrollment on Troy University’s main campus– While that’s something for the university to celebrate, it’s also creating challenges.
The incoming freshman class saw an increase of 400 students. There’s been a lot of complaints about limited parking around the campus.
University leaders also say they will be working to add increased laboratory space and revamp the art department. Level state funding puts pressure on the university to increase enrollment and to increase tuition. It’s gone up more than 50 percent since 2009.
Dr. John Dew, Senior Vice Chancellor of Student Services & Administration said, “That has not given us flexibility or financial room to be able to do any of the investments that have to be done in terms of the facilities to keep them up to date and to open new facilities. So that has been driving most of the tuition increases…we don’t have an interest in pushing up tuition for the sake of doing that. So it will really be a question of level funding for the state of Alabama and continuing having increases in terms of enrollment. “
Next fall students on the Troy campus will see a $100 per semester fee. The student government’s been pushing for a new rec center, so the fee will go towards that project.
