New Selma Police & Fire Chiefs Hit the Ground Running

From the West Alabama Newsroom–  The police and fire departments in the city of Selma — are both under new leadership. Each department is headed up by a first-time chief — who brings a wealth of experience to the job.

Police Chief John Brock has 33 years of law enforcement experience — 29 with the Selma Police Department. Brock says he’s spent his first two weeks on the job — assessing the department — and looking for ways to make it better.

“Right now we’re trying to increase patrols, patrols in the neighborhoods,” said Brock. “Let people see the officers. They feel more comfortable when they see an officer out there. So, that’s my primary goal is patrol division.”

The city also has a new fire chief. Tony Stephens spent 20 years with the Montgomery Fire Department.

“Basically anything that’s in the fire service at some point in time I received training on it, and that’s what I plan on doing is coming in and using the knowledge that I have obtained over the years and taking that and instilling that into the personnel that I have,” said Stephens.

City officials say the police and fire departments are the two largest departments in the city.
