Pike Co. High School Senior Flies Into History Books

A Pike County High schooler is first in flight.

School officials believe Colton Johnson’s the first in the nation to earn his private pilot license through a public high school program. He went through training with Trojan Aviation- part of a partnership with Troy University and Mauna Loa Helicopters in Hawaii.

Colton’s in the first group of students from Pike County Schools to be sent through the university’s program free of charge.

Colton Johnson said, “It’s just amazing because I got to do this without pay as well as I’m going through college right now and it’s just a head start on life basically.”

The Pike County Schools partnership with the University and Mauna Loa allows students like Colton to also receive an associates degree free of charge. It’s worth anywhere from
$10-15,000 in flight training at no expense to the high schooler.
