Butler Co. Driver’s License Office One of 31 to Close Statewide

The state is closing 31 driver’s license offices starting October 1 because of budget cuts in the General Fund budget. Butler County is one among the 31.

This is phase one of the offices closing. In early 2016, The remaining offices will close and leave only Montgomery, Mobile, Huntsville and Birmingham open.

This means that anyone with an expired or revoked license will have to make a trip to one of the four cities to get a new license.

It will also apply to first time drivers looking for a permit.

Butler Co. District Attorney Charlotte Tesmer says the closings could lead to residents in her county driving without a license.

“Some people cannot afford to go, for example, to Montgomery or Mobile. They don’t have the gas money to go. And I could see where people would just not get their driver’s license due to their economic issues,” she told Alabama News Network.
