Perry Co. Hit Extra Hard by State Cutbacks and Closures

From the West Alabama Newsroom–Â State budget cuts have many state facilities shutting down across the state — and Perry County is being hit especially hard.
The A-B-C store — the driver’s license office — and the Alabama National Guard Armory in the city of Marion — are all listed to be shut down in the coming months.
The closures are part of a reduction in state services based on the tight budget approved by legislators.
County leaders say the closures put an undue burden on the community.
“We got to have gaming now cause we got to have new revenue and politicians and elected officials all across the state of Alabama has to understand that petty politics at home is not going to get us anywhere,” said Commissioner Albert Turner.
Congresswoman Terri Sewell plans to ask the Department of Justice to investigate.
She says the closures are disproportionately hitting the state’s poor, rural and African-American residents.
