Knowing you live in a safe city is nice, but it might even be nicer knowing your hometown is one of the safest.

An article released by safewise.com named the fifteen safest cities in each state. The rankings are based on crime statistics from 2013. Using those statistics and population size, the article gives percentages for violent crimes and robberies for each city. Greenville was one of the safest for Alabama, with 0.00 for both categories.

“It’s a great place to live. Been knowing that all my life!” says Mayor Dexter McLendon. He was not surprised by the rankings at all.

“We’re glad to know people think how safe we are,” McLendon adds. “We always continue to work on it. We’ve got a great police department, we work well with the county and sheriff’s department, I think that’s important.”

Greenville Police Chief Lonzo Ingram thinks the new title is accurate for his city. He attributes much of the success to his team’s humble attitude.

“I think the numbers reflect how we police the community,” he says. “I think we view ourselves, I know we view ourselves, as servants first, and then policemen second.”

Ingram thinks his police team is just doing its job, and doing it well.

“You know, this is not rocket science, what we’re doing here,” he adds. “You’ve got to get some type of intelligence on crime, when it occurs. You’ve got to follow up on it and be relentless in your pursuit of trying to prevent crime and trying to solve crimes when they occur.”
