The city of Greenville was buzzing with excitement Thursday morning as Governor Robert Bentley’s helicopter touched down on the front lawn of Lurleen B. Wallace Community College.
Bentley stopped by to speak to the local Rotary Club on the upcoming legislative meetings and answer any questions Greenville residents had concerning his State of the State address. One of the biggest questions was what he wanted to do about a state lottery.
“If they can get it out of the legislature, then people will be able to vote on it,” Bentley says. “My only desire is that the money goes to the general fund, because that’s where the money’s needed the most.”
Bentley spoke highly of Alabama’s education system and new programs that are working to get a higher graduation rate for the state. Programs Superintendent of Butler County Schools Amy Bryan says are already well established in her schools.
“It was fantastic because of him coming here, and talking about programs that we all, all of us in the audience know that we have here in Butler County,” Bryan says. “We are taking advantage of our workforce development in our schools through the funds that we can find for career tech. We were just recognized for innovation!”
Mayor Dexter McLendon was happy his question about prison reform was answered.
“The one that resonated the most with me was what he said about prisons,” McLendon says. “You know, I thought privatizing prisons would be a good way to be able to pay for it, and he says they got something better than that. I can’t wait to see what that is.”
Bentley says he is prepared for his State of the State address in February, and says he is looking forward to Alabama’s bright future.
“I’m going to be talking about primarily the agenda that I will be offering in the State of the State and I’m going to spend my next three years talking about great things that are going to be happening for the state of Alabama,” Bentley says.
Governor Bentley will deliver his State of the State Address at the beginning of the Legislative session in February.
