A project to expand and improve the Selma Interpretive Center is set to get underway in Selma — in less than a week.
The second and third floors of the building will be completely renovated during the project.
The interpretive center will get new meeting and office space — as well as a new elevator.
“It’s been a lot people who have been working on this for years and now its about to come to fruition,” said Mayor George Evans.
Evans says the project will start January 27th — and take about 240 days to complete.
The Selma Interpretive Center tells the story of the Selma Voting Rights Movement of 1965.
The building is owned by the city — but the National Park Service handles the day to day operation.
NPS Site Manager Andrew Callens says the center will still be open to visitors — despite the ongoing construction to upgrade the facility.
“Because we have tourists that come from out of town, from out of country so we want to make sure that the center remain open,” said Callens.
