Torrential rainfall early Friday morning washed out several roads in Lowndes County and left several families stranded.

EMA Director David Butts says a temporary drainage structure on Mushatt Road and part of the road itself was swept away by the storm.

That left many of the people who live on the road unable to get out — and others unable to get back to their homes.

Butts says crews are working to get roads reopened as soon as possible.

“If not today, if the water don’t go down enough to get them in today then we’re going to be working tomorrow until we can get them in. So, everyday is a work day until we can get them back to their homes,” he said.

Butts says there are two more washed out roads around the county that crews are working to fix. He says all of the problems are a continuation from the Christmas Eve weather event.
