WAL OLDHOSPITAL PKG2333From the West Alabama Newsroom– Efforts are underway in Selma — to breathe new life into a historic civil rights site that’s sat vacant in the city for more than 30 years.

City leaders say they’re working on a plan to turn the old Good Samaritan Hospital — into a new state-of-the-art — medical center.

They say the new center would include an imaging center, a complete lab and a variety of services — including oncology and cardiology.

Mayor George Evans says the project will turn the city into a hub for medical services for the entire area.

“Its not in competition with the current hospital. This is going to be a different kind of clinic altogether,” said Evans.

“We have doctors already who are in other cities and other states wanting to come here and relocate here and start their practice here.”

Evans says a portion of the space would also be used as a museum.

Voting rights martyr Jimmie lee Jackson — along with the marchers who were attacked on Bloody Sunday — were all treated at the Good Samaritan Hospital — back in 1965.
