A new Walmart food-only market is now open in Montgomery at the former Bonnie Crest Country Club property on Federal Drive.

It didn’t take long for the parking lot to be full at the new neighborhood market across from Garrett Coliseum. The new store is the grocery, smaller version of the big box retailer. Residents opposed the new store last year, but the city council voted to approve a zoning change to allow it. Even with the controversy, many people were happy to see it finally open.

Brantley Lyons, Montgomery City Council District 2 said, “What we had here was an old vacant lot and old buildings and now we have a new facility and we are glad to have it.”

Irma Williams, a Montgomery resident said, “I am not from this area but I think it will be nice for this area because they have to come to the other side of town so I think they will do real good.”

The store added 95 jobs to the area. The neighborhood Walmart on the east side will open in March.
