23 Alabama Prisoners Exonerated since 1989

Alabama is tied for 7th place in state rankings.

Four of those Alabama exonerations happened last year according to a report from The National Registry for Exonerations.

It says there were 14 Alabama prisoners freed when murder or manslaughter charges were overturned. One involved a death row inmate. One of the cases the report cites occurred in Montgomery.

The report found the Alabama inmates spent 172 years in prison when they should have been free.
