Tuskegee & Selma split Paterson Field doubleheader
The Tuskegee University baseball team split a doubleheader with Selma University, winning game one 11-8 before dropping game two 4-3.
Tuskegee (2-2) and Selma traded the lead in game one until Tuskegee broke an 8-all tie in the bottom of the fifth inning. After Clinton Crews reached on a fielding error, he advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Evan Kearse before advancing to third on a groundout. He later scored on a Joseph Mauldin RBI single up the middle to give Tuskegee a 9-8 lead.
The Golden Tigers added a pair of runs after Rick Green singled down the left field line advancing Mauldin to third and scored on an error. Green later scored on an Elgin Woodside RBI single to push the lead to 11-8.
Green finished the first game with three hits and two runs scored, while the reigning SIAC Player of the Week Woodside finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored to go along with a three runs batted in. Kearse also collected multiple hits in the win.
Daniel Croom (1-0) earned the win with two innings of scoreless relief with a strikeout.
The Golden Tigers had their chances in game two to claim the victory, including in the bottom of the seventh inning when they loaded the bases.
After Lane Williams led off the seventh with a double, he was called out on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Samuel Glickman. The ball was hit back to Selma pitcher Bishop Harris, who fired to third for the first out of the inning. After Jalen Luter was hit by a pitch, Woodside was walked to load the bases with one out.
However, Harris was able to strike out Mauldin and Alexander Henderson for the final two outs of the game.
In the second game, Mauldin went 2-for-4 for the Golden Tigers who were held to six hits. Marquez Colbert (0-1) suffered the loss with 0.2 innings pitched, allowing two runs with four hit batters.
Tuskegee returns to action Saturday in a doubleheader against Alabama-Huntsville on the road, and finishing the series up on Sunday.
