AUM opens Florida road swing with 3-1 Win at Embry-Riddle

Behind six innings of two-hit ball by junior Kade Suther, the No. 13 Auburn Montgomery baseball team opened a five-game road trip in Florida with a 3-1 victory over Embry-Riddle Aeronautical UniversityThursday at Sliwa Stadium.

NOTES
• The Warhawks improved to 3-1 on the year with the win.

• With the loss, Embry-Riddle fell to 5-2 overall.

• AUM improved to 6-15 all-time against the Eagles.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

• After hitting Jonathan Camp with a two-out pitch in the first inning, Suther retired 14 straight batters and pitching into the seventh inning to earn his first victory with the Warhawks. He walked just one and struck out six in the win.

• Senior Mac Seibert was 3-for-3 at the plate, driving in a pair of runs and walking once.

• Junior Jack Folmar had two hits, including a double, scored twice and added a stolen base.

• Senior Richard Nason struck out two of the four hitters he faced in relief.

• Junior Jed Carter worked around a pair of walks and pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his second save of the year.

• Corey Tufts struck out seven in 4 2/3 innings of work for the Eagles, but took the loss after allowing a pair of runs.

• Tobias Moreno finished 2-for-3 and was the lone ERAU player with multiple hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• After leaving the bases loaded in the second inning, the Warhawks pushed across a pair of runs in the third inning off Tufts. With one out, Dalton Kelley reached on a fielder’s choice, before later stealing second. Folmar reached on an infield single, putting runners on the corners for Seibert, who drove in Kelley with a single up the middle. Following a walk to Blake Grill, Houston Davenport was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, plating Folmar and giving AUM a 2-0 lead.

• The Warhawks added a third run in the seventh, when Seibert drove in Folmar with a single to right field. Folmar led off the inning with a double over Liam Goodall in left field.

• The Eagles avoided the shutout when Moreno scored on a throwing error. With one out and runners on first and second, Brady Eldridge forced a ground ball off the bat of Enderson Velasquez. Michael Tedford fielded the ball and flipped to Deric Boone, whose throw got past Seibert and allowed Moreno to score.

• ERAU had an opportunity to tie the game in the ninth inning after a pair of walks by Carter to lead off the frame. However, after a sacrifice moved the two runners into scoring position, Carter struck out Mitchel Lindheim and Logan Malphurs to end the game and preserve the win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

• AUM stranded 13 runners on base, compared to eight for the Eagles.

• Embry-Riddle committed a pair of errors, while the Warhawks committed one error. The one AUM error led to the only run of the game for the Eagles.

QUOTING THE COACH

“We are making the trip to see where we stand and this was a great start to a very tough road trip,” head coach Marty Lovrich said. “I thought Kade was incredible tonight and really set the tone for the next few days. Mac had three really nice at bats and did an outstanding job at first base. He made several tag plays and made a couple impressive picks. Hopefully this will be the start of a strong trip for him.”

UP NEXT

• The Warhawks will return to action Friday, Feb. 12, when they continue their Florida road trip at No. 15 Keiser University for a twin bill beginning at 11:30 a.m. AUM will look to senior Raymond Moody on the mound in game one, with fellow senior Chance Calloway taking the ball in game two.
