The Greenville Police Department is offering help to anyone facing warrants or multiple fines. During the months of February and March, the police are holding their annual amnesty program, giving people an option to avoid hefty legal penalties.

SAL AMNESTY PICSargent Danny Bond is in charge of the program, and said he is always available to help someone out.

“If you think you’ve got a warrant, we need you to come in, call us, talk to me and we will do our very best to work with you to get these things cleared up,” Bond said. He said if anyone has multiple tickets or warrants, they can go to him and work out a way to pay off all or some that they owe.

“Well it’s always good being able to help the people that you’re working for. So if we can help them to help us and them not go to jail, then it’s a win-win situation for everybody,” he said.

In the first week of this year’s program, Bond and Police Chief Lonzo Ingram have helped close to 35 people work out a payment plan for what they owe.

“You know, so many times we’re dealing with people on the lower economic scale, who run a foul of the law and end up in the criminal justice system, and anything we can try to do to help these people clear these things up at a reduced cost, that’ll help them continue to work, provide for their families, it’s just a win-win,” said Ingram.

The program is traditionally only a month long, but Ingram expanded it to March 31st this year. He hopes to help as many people possible stay out of jail due to unpaid warrants or tickets.

“This man, woman, whatever needs to be working, drawing a salary, paying taxes, taking care of their family,” Ingram added. “Which is what we’re trying to help people do.”

Sargent Bond wants anyone who has questions or needs help through the amnesty program to give him a call at his direct line, (334) 437-1827.
