First win for Tuskegee softball elusive, drop 2 @ UWG
The Tuskegee University softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to the University of West Georgia Wednesday afternoon. Tuskegee (0-11) had their chances in both games, playing without three of their regular starters as they fell in game one 7-4 and 3-2 in game two.
In game one, the Lady Golden Tigers out-hit West Georgia with their second-highest total of the season with nine. The total included a pair of hits from Roneshia Rudolph and Jasmine Howard.
Tuskegee came out early, scoring a run in the top of the first when Rudolph singled through the left side scoring Cari Driver from second. The Lady Golden Tigers looked like they were going to keep the inning going when Howard laced a ball down the leftfield line just outside the chalk for a foul ball.
After West Georgia took the lead 2-1 in the bottom of the first, Tuskegee scored a pair of runs in the third to take a one-run lead. After Rudolph walked and stole second, she scored on a ball hit back to the pitcher by Jamaica Williams. The inning continued when Williams scored on a Howard singled to left.
Tuskegee added their final run of the game in the sixth when Howard drove in Rudolph.
Kaylin Finch (0-3) suffered the loss, throwing a complete game allowing seven runs off of seven hits with a pair of strikeouts.
In game two, Tuskegee struck first in the fourth inning following a Sharde Thomas walk. She advanced to second on a walk to Rudolph, and both runners advanced on a double steal. Thomas would later score on a wild pitch.
After West Georgia took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Lady Golden Tigers added a run in the fifth inning when Howard drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a groundout. She would later score on a single down the right field line by Chante Warner to tie the game at 2-all.
Tuskegee had a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth with runners at first and second before a double play ended the inning. West Georgia (10-1) was able to put the game away in the bottom of the seventh inning when the first two hitters reached base, and the Wolves were able to push a run across on a sacrifice fly.
Warner picked up the lone hit of the game for Tuskegee, while Toni Beth Garner (0-3) suffered the loss as she worked 6.1 innings and allowed three runs (one earned) and struck out five.
Tuskegee returns to action this weekend in the Flagler Invitational, facing the host Flagler on Saturday at 12 noon (est) and Eckerd at 4:30 (est).
