Man Takes Own Life After Robbery & Car Chase

State police are investigating the death of a suspect accused of robbing an Auburn convenience store and leading police on a car chase.

Auburn police say the suspect in a late Wednesday morning convenience store robbery drove off in a Jeep Wrangler, leading police officers and a sheriff’s deputy on a car chase. They say he fired a shot that struck one of the pursuing vehicles but didn’t hit the officer, who returned fire.

Police said in a statement that the suspect crashed the Jeep into a GMC Yukon, and was later found inside the Jeep with an “apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

The Yukon driver and a passenger were taken to a hospital.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating the exchange of gunfire involving the officer.

The dead suspect’s name wasn’t released.
