The recent uptick in violence in Lowndes County, two separate nightclub shootings over the last two weeks.
The sheriff’s office has been surprised by the violence, and even though arrests have been made, they’re still looking for more suspects.
While it might not look like much of a nightclub, authorities say it gets packed on the weekends.
The Calhoun Lounge was the site of a shooting on February 7th.
Sheriff’s Deputies say an altercation with a security guard led to a group leaving the property, firing shots into the air.
That’s when they say security guard Robert Turner opened fire, killing one of the passengers.
“He wasn’t provoked. There was no threat to him. The subject was moving away from him. Although there were shots fired from that vehicle as it was leaving the parking lot, there was no reason for him to fire into that vehicle. He himself shouldn’t have been in possession of a firearm,” said Lt. Lashun Hutson.
Turner has been arrested and charged with murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle.
One week later authorities were sent out to another shooting, one that almost turned deadly.
The suspect, Chunaris Grant, turned himself in this week.
Authorities say Grant waited here outside of the club for the three girls. Then he followed them in his car. That’s when they say he opened fire and ran them off the road.
This is the scene where the car left the road, hit a tree and flipped, ejecting one of the passengers.
You can still see remnants of the crash almost two weeks later.
Deputies say this crime was motivated by jealousy.
“His ex girlfriend, who was one of the victims, had broken up with him that week and had decided to date someone new. So it stemmed from ex girlfriend, ex boyfriend type of situation so he was mad she was seeing someone new,” said investigator Jeremy Marvin.
All of this has authorities a little on edge.
They say it’s mostly peaceful in the county.
“It’s not common to have a crime like this. I can’t remember the last time we had a crime like this here in Lowndes County. So it’s another reason why I’m glad we got Mr. Grant off the streets. One less person we have to worry about,” said Marvin.
The Sheriff’s office is still looking for more suspects in the Calhoun Lounge murder.
