It seems no region of the U.S. is immune to extreme weather. A driving force behind some it can be attributed to those warmer waters over the eastern Pacific just west of the South American continent. It’s referred to as El Nino and it’s affects can be felt globally. Winds blowing over those warmer waters are mechanism for heat transfer and storm development. Here in the deep south a typical El Nino leads to a cool and wet weather pattern. We have definitely experienced both so far this season and with the outlook for the current strong El Nino to continue..we could be looking at even more significant weather events this spring. Studies of past El Nino’s have shown a correlation with strong El Nino years and an increased number of tornadoes in Alabama. We don’t know for certain the reason but It could be a result of a stronger jet stream along with increased warm gulf air flowing northward and adding energy to our atmosphere.
