Georgia Tech beats Auburn 4-1

AUBURN, Ala. (auburntigers.com) –Anfernee Grier doubled to extend his hitting streak to 14 games and Andrew Mitchell allowed just one run in five innings, but Auburn baseball fell to No. 9 Georgia Tech 4-1 on Tuesday at Plainsman Park.

“Georgia Tech played good defense out there tonight and I think they took some hits away from us,” Auburn head coach Butch Thompson said. “Defense was the difference in the ball game. Andrew (Mitchell) pitched well and extended to 15 scoreless innings, before he gave up the run in the fifth. His delivery has come a long way. I still believe that pitching will be the strength of our ball club going forward. I think our pitching staff is growing and I think we are going to have to have our offense if we want to have a chance to win.”

Mitchell turned in his third consecutive strong performance allowing just one run with five strikeouts in five innings. He has now allowed just one run in 16.0 innings pitched with 16 strikeouts over his last three starts.

Ben Braymer (L, 1-2) took the loss with two runs allowed in one inning of relief.

Auburn (6-7) got on board in the first inning on a Niko Buentello RBI single that scored Grier. The RBI gave Buentello 23 on the season, the top total in the SEC.

Grier stole two bases on the night to increase his total to 11 on the season, a new career high.

Georgia Tech (12-0) scored four unanswered runs to take a 4-1 lead with the biggest hit a 2-run double by Joey Bart in the sixth.

Cole Pitts improved to 1-0 on the season the Jackets. He allowed just one run in five innings pitched with four strikeouts.

The Georgia Tech bullpen allowed just one hit over four innings capped by Matthew Gorst earning his fourth save with a perfect ninth.
