No. 3 Auburn men’s golf finish second at Tiger Invitational

OPELIKA, Ala. (auburntigers.com) – The No. 3 Auburn men’s golf team closed out the Tiger Invitational presented by Jason Dufner with an even par 288 and finished second Tuesday at the par 72, 7,149-yard Grand National Lakes Course.

The Tigers (285-292-288 – 865) were surpassed by Troy (290-289-283 – 862) on the final day as the Trojans captured the tournament title by three strokes.

A pair of Tigers finished tied for third at 2-under 214 in All-SEC senior Michael Johnson (71-74-69) and All-SEC junior Matt Gilchrest (68-75-71). Johnson, a native of Birmingham, Ala., fired the day’s team-low with a 3-under 69, carding six birdies. Gilchrest, of Southlake, Texas, totaled five birdies on the day on Nos. 4, 6, 7, 11 and 13.

All-America sophomore Ben Schlottman also finished in the Top 10 for Auburn, tying for sixth overall at 1-under 72-69-74–215. Senior Jake Mondy tied for 38th at 74-75-76-226 and freshman Trace Crowe tied for 63rd at 83-74-74-231.

Auburn’s B team tied for fourth led by freshman Graysen Huff’s 2-under 70 final round that climbed him 10 spots 12th at 2-over 74-74-70-218. Junior Will Long (73-73-74-220) tied for 18th, while freshman Jacob Solomon (75-77-69-221) and junior Ryan Benton tied for 22nd. Freshman Mark Lawrence tied for 49th at 77-78-73-228 while junior Blake Messer, competing as an individual, tied for 71st at 79-76-78-233.

UNCG led by co-medalists Taylor Coalson (76-69-68-213) and Jake McGlone (70-73-70-213) finished third at 288-878 followed by Auburn B, Kennesaw State (296-879), Georgia State (288-883), Kentucky (298-892), VCU (300-895), Ohio State (288-896) and UNCW (303-898).

Mississippi State finished 11th at 302-900 followed by Minnesota (298-901), Kansas State (300-901), Southeastern Louisiana (294-902), Notre Dame (295-906), Jacksonville State (299-911), South Alabama (311-924) and Tulsa (315-935).
