Tuskegee softball falls to 3rd ranked UA-Huntsville
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (goldentigersports.com) — The Tuskegee University softball team ventured out of conference in midweek action, falling to third-ranked Alabama-Huntsville in a pair of games.
In the game one 8-0 loss, the Lady Golden Tigers had their chances after giving up five first inning runs to UAH. Tuskegee (2-20), loaded the bases in the top of third inning with two outs. Following a groundout by Jasmine Howard and a strikeout of Haley Plato, freshman Sharde Thomas singled to right to give the team their first baserunner of the inning.
Cari Driver grounded to short, which allowed Thomas to advance all the way to third. The next batter, Jamaica Williams, was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs before Kayliin Finch was forced into a ground ball to end the inning.
Tuskegee was able to get runners on in the fourth and fifth innings, but could not push them across the plate.
Finch (1-4) suffered the loss in game one, working four innings and allowing eight runs (five earned) off of seven hits.
In the opener, Driver was the lone player with multiple hits as Tuskegee was held to five hits total. She finished 2-for-3 on the game, while Thomas, Karisa Foye and Finch all picked up hits in the loss.
In the game two 12-0 loss, UAH (23-3) needed just two innings to score as they plated seven in the third and five in the fourth for the win.
Thomas led Tuskegee in game two as she went 2-for-3, while Finch and Plato picked up the other two hits in the nightcap.
Toni Beth Garner (1-6) suffered the loss in game two, going 2.1 innings and allowing six runs off of six hits. She did not allow a walk and struck out a pair of UAH batters.
Tuskegee returns to action Friday afternoon in conference play, heading to Birmingham for a three-game series in Birmingham. The first game starts at 4 pm Friday afternoon.
