FD ReeseA living legend in the civil rights movement was honored at Alabama State University.

The Reverend F.D. Reese had a magnolia tree planted in his honor on campus. Reese graduated ASU in 1951 and then quickly became a foot solider in the fight for voting rights in the 1950’s.

As president of the The Dallas County Voters League,  Reese endured years of abuse and threats make sure people of color were allowed to vote.

It was Reese, who originally invited Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior to Selma.  That invitation eventually led to the Voting Right’s Act of 1965.

In February, Reese was also honored with the Congressional Gold Medal at a joint session of Congress.
