Columbus State smacks Tuskegee 17-1
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (goldentigersports.com) — The 13th-ranked Columbus State University Cougars pulled away from Tuskegee University late, blowing open an close game en route to a 17-1 non-conference victory Wednesday afternoon at Paterson Field.
Tuskegee (3-14) stood toe-to-toe with Columbus State (17-4) through five innings, before the Cougars were able to score 12 runs over the last four innings.
Eugene Mabota (0-2) kept Columbus State off balance for four innings, allowing just two runs off of two hits. He went three consecutive innings of scoreless, and hitless, baseball before Columbus State was able to score three runs in the top of the fifth to pull ahead for good.
After Columbus State scored a pair of runs in the top half of the first inning, Tuskegee answered in the bottom of the first with a run of their own. Samuel Glickman drew a leadoff walk, before he was thrown out on a bunt attempt by Marc Kennedy. Junior first baseman Ricky Green followed Kennedy, and promptly doubled to right center to drive home Kennedy from first for the Golden Tigers run.
Kyle Peals (1-0) held Tuskegee to just two hits over six innings of work, while a trio of pitchers out of the bullpen held the Golden Tigers to one hit over three innings.
Green, Jalen Luter and Lane Wiliams each picked up a hit in the loss. Mabota was tagged with the loss, working five innings and allowing five runs off of six hits. He also struck out four in the loss.
Tuskegee is scheduled to play at LeMoyne-Owen in Memphis this weekend, with games scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. Due to the rain forecasted in the area, the games may be moved to later in the weekend. – check with GoldenTigerSports.com for updates on the series.
