department-of-justice2323232.jpgA federal judge has approved a 350-thousand dollar settlement over housing discrimination claims at eight river region apartment complexes and dozens more in Alabama and other states.

The apartment complex managers agreed to retrofit apartment complexes to make them more accessible to people with disabilities. That includes things like installing sloped curbs and updating bathrooms to accommodate people in wheelchairs.

The companies will pay 3 hundred thousand dollars  to create a fund for people with disabilities and pay a 50-thousand dollar fine. Most of the complexes were constructed with federal assistance.

The local complexes listed by The U.S. Justice Department include:

  • Brentwood Landing Apartments, Prattville, Alabama
  • Brentwood Landing II Apartments, Prattville
  • Charleston Square Apartments, Troy, Alabama
  • Hamilton Place Apartments, Millbrook, Alabama
  • Heatherwood Apartments, Alexander City, Alabama
