AUM baseball wins 6-1 over Mobile
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (aumathletics.com) —- The No. 13 Auburn Montgomery baseball team opened its three-game Southern States Athletic Conference series against the University of Mobile with a 6-1 victory Thursday.
NOTES
• With the win, the Warhawks improved to 18-5 on the year and 4-0 in league play.
• The Rams fell to 14-8 overall and suffered their first SSAC loss (3-1) of the year.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Houston Davenport finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs.
• Cody Rush was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
• Brandon Davis added a pair of hits, including a double.
• Kade Suther tossed 7 1/3 innings of six-hit, one-run ball, striking out four and walking just two. He improved to 4-1 on the season.
• Brady Eldridge tossed 1 2/3 of perfect relief, striking out two.
• Travis Tessandori had three hits for the Rams.
• T.J. Hearn drove in the lone run of the game for Mobile with a solo home run.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• AUM scored a pair of runs in the second inning off Mobile starter Garrett Waters (4-2). Deric Boone started the rally with a one-out single, before coming in to score on a double by Davis. Davis came in to score on an error by Rams’ shortstop Payne Palmer.
• Mobile trimmed the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the third on the solo home run by Hearn.
• The Warhawks put two more runs on the board in the bottom of the third inning to up their lead to 4-1. John-Mark Cosby and Jack Folmar each singled in the frame and came around to score on a two-out throwing error by Hearn.
• AUM added single runs in the sixth and eighth innings, both on run-scoring singles by Davenport. Rush and Brandon Pooler each tallied one-out singles in the sixth, before Davenport ripped a single to centerfield to score Rush. Davenport plated Rush again in the eighth, with single to right-centerfield after Rush doubled to lead off the frame.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Each team turned a double play in the contest
• Mobile committed four errors in the game, while the Warhawks made one.
• The Warhawks stranded nine runners on base, compared to seven for the Rams.
• For just the third time this season, the Warhawks did not collect a walk.
• The 12 AUM hits were the second most by the team this season. The Warhawks had 16 hits at Talladega on Feb. 26.
