Lady Hornets draw Texas in NCAA Tournament’s 1st round

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (swac.org) -Alabama State will travel to Austin, Texas to face the University of Texas March 19th as the 15th seed during the first and second rounds of the Bridgeport Regional. The Lady Hornets tip off at 8 pm. CST on ESPN 2.

State is making its second consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament after defeating Southern during the 2016 Toyota SWAC Basketball Tournament – earning the Conference AQ (first visit back in 2003). The Lady Hornets finished the season with at 19-11 record and nine top-50 NCAA rankings.

The Lady Hornets will rely on their triple threat – Britney Wright, Jasmine Peeples and Daniele Ewert – to make history, getting past regionals. Wright leads ALST in scoring, averaging 14.9 points a game followed by Peeples who manages 8 points per game and Ewert who claims 8.5 points per game.

Texas enters regionals as the no. 2 seed and a seventh-place position on the Associate Press Top-25 poll. The Longhorns earned their 28th at-large visit to the tournament, their previous visit being last season.

Brooke McCarty leads Texas in scoring, averaging 11.8 points per game followed by Imani Boyette who hits an average of 11.6 points per game. With a 28-4 overall season record, the Longhorns’ only losses are to Oklahoma and Baylor (three losses).

The winner of the Texas/Alabama State game will face the winner of the BYU/Missouri game March 21st.
