Davenport lifts AUM to 12-5 win in series finale against Georgetown

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (aumathletics.com)—- Junior Houston Davenport drove in six runs, including four on a grand slam, and helped the No. 13 Auburn Montgomery baseball team to a 12-5 victory over visiting Georgetown College Tuesday. 

NOTES
• With the win, the Warhawks improved to 22-6 on the year.
• Georgetown fell to 16-12 overall.

• The six runs batted in by Davenport were the most by a Warhawk since Blake Bearden hit three home runs and drove in six at Emmanuel on March 22, 2014.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Davenport finished 3-for-4 at the plate, connecting on his first home run of the season and driving in a career-best six.
• Deric Boone was 2-for-2 with a walk and a run batted in.
• Mac Seibert finished 1-for-2 with a walk, run scored and RBI.
• Brandon Pooler was 1-for-2 with a walk, run scored, RBI and a stolen base.
• Clark Gray (2-0) and Richard Nason each tossed two scoreless innings of relief, while Jed Carter worked around a pair of hits and a hit batter to throw a scoreless ninth.
• Jalen Poindexter had three hits for the Tigers.
• Kyle Jackson was 2-for-3 with his second home run of the series.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Tigers took a 3-0 lead off starter Kade Suther in the top of the second inning. Jackson started the rally with a solo home run, before Robert Longtree and Chaz Meadows each picked up RBIs. Georgetown put together three hits and also took advantage of a walk.
• The Warhawks countered with four runs in the bottom of the second and took the lead for good. John-Mark Cosby led off the inning by reaching on an error, before Jack Folmar walked. Boone sacrificed the two runners up a base, before Brandon Davis walked to load the bases. Seibert followed with a RBI single up the middle and put AUM on the board. Cody Rush pulled the Warhawks to within one run, 3-2, with a safety squeeze bunt, allowing each runner to advance and Folmar to score. Pooler tied the game when he beat out a bunt single, scoring Davis, while Davenport beat out an infield single to score Siebert and give the Warhawks a 4-3 lead.
• AUM upped its advantage in the third inning on a RBI single by Boone.

• The Warhawks put the game out of reach in the fourth inning, using two hits to score four times. Following walks to Seibert and Pooler, as well as a single by Rush, Davenport connected on a 3-1 pitch from Sean Hale and tucked it just inside the left-field foul pole.
• AUM added three runs on five hits in the sixth inning and extended its lead to 12-3. Davenport picked up his sixth RBI of the game with a single up the middle, while Dalton Kelley also drove in a run with a single. Cosby plated the final run when he grounded into a double play.

• The Tigers provided the final margin by connecting on four hits off Cole Goodwin in the seventh. Sam Medina and Nicholas Lugo drove in runs during the frame.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• The Warhawks pounded out 11 hits in the contest, but were outhit by the Tigers, 14-11.
• Georgetown stranded 11 runners on base, compared to just four for AUM.
• The Warhawks committed three errors in the contest, while the Tigers made a pair of miscues.
• The two teams combined to turn five double plays, two of which by AUM.
• The Warhawks played 21 players in the victory.

UP NEXT
• The Warhawks will open a three-game Southern States Athletic Conference series against Bethel University Friday at 6 p.m.
