Tuskegee baseball falls 9-5 to Georgia Southwestern
AMERICUS, Ga. (goldentigersports.com) — After falling behind early Tuesday afternoon, the Tuskegee University rally came up short as they fell 9-5 to Georgia Southwestern State University at Hurricane Stadium in the Susan K. Smith Baseball and Tennis Complex.
Georgia Southwestern (15-10) scored six of their runs in the first two innings off of Tuskegee starter Joseph Mauldin (1-4), including four in the first. They added two more in the fourth and one in the seventh for the final margin.
After the Hurricanes jumped on top, Tuskegee (3-15) came charging back in the third scoring four of their own. The inning started with a one-out walk to Samuel Glickman on a 3-1 count, and he advanced to third when Jalen Luter connected on a double down the rightfield line with two strikes. Glickman came around to score when Ricky Green collected an RBI on a single to center, pushing Luter to third. The freshman scored on a sacrifice fly by Gemini Jackson to trim the deficit to 6-2. The inning was kept alive when Elgin Woodside singled to center to put runners at first and second, and they were loaded on a two-out walk to Evan Kearse. Both Green and Woodside both scored on a a two-out single to right center by Ryan Green to trim the deficit to 6-4.
That was as close as Tuskegee would get as Georgia Southwestern added two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to push the lead back to four, 8-4.
The Golden Tigers added another run in the eighth after Christian Marshall reached on a two-out infield error. He moved to second when Glickman reached on an infield single, and scored when Luter singled to left for the final run of the of the game for Tuskegee.
Tuskegee had other chances to score in the contest as they got runners in scoring position in the first, fourth, seventh and ninth innings.
Luter and Ricky Green led Tuskegee at the plate, with each picking up three hits and a run batted in. Woodside and Glickman each added a pair of hits in the loss for Tuskegee, who finished with 12 hits on the day.Alex Kranick, Dakota Long and Brett Burgess led Georgia Southwestern with two hits each.
Mauldin suffered the loss, working two innings and allowing six runs (five earned) off of six hits. He walked four and recorded a pair of strikeouts. Eugene Mabota came out of the bullpen to work four innings, allowing two runs (none earned) off of two hits while striking out three. Desmond Jones and Stanley Smith combined to work the last two innings on the mound for Tuskegee.
Dylan Brown (2-0) picked up the win for Georgia Southwestern, working six innings. He allowed four runs off of seven hits, while striking out seven and walking three.
Tuskegee returns to action this weekend in conference action, facing Lane College on the road. The games on Saturday will be played at “The Ball Park at Jackson,” the Double-A stadium of the Seattle Mariners. The game on Sundaywill move back on campus.
