Plastics Company Fire

AP-AL–Plastics Factory Fire

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) – Fire officials say a blaze that damaged a plastics company in downtown Birmingham was accidental.

Birmingham Fire & Rescue Captain Tyrone Fornest says the fire started in a wood shop at the plant. Fire Chief Charles Gordon said workers were making fiberglass molds when sawdust in the room combined with chemicals used to make molds started the fire.

Rick Turman owns the business, and he says he tried to put out the flames himself with a fire extinguisher, but there was too much smoke.

Officials say eight employees were at work when the fire started, but no injuries were reported.
