Auburn’s Michael Johnson named SEC Golfer of the Week

AUBURN, Ala. (auburntigers.com)– All-SEC senior Michael Johnson has been named SEC Golfer of the Week for the second time in a month and the third of his career by winning this weekend’s Schenkel Invitational with a birdie on the second playoff hole, the SEC Office announced on Tuesday.

Johnson, who had a 13-under 68-65-70—203 in the Schenkel, broke the Auburn single-season record with his third victory and is one shy of the NCAA lead this season.

With five career wins, Johnson is one win away from tying Jimmy Green’s school record. His second round 65 is the second-lowest of his career while recording his 11th round in the 60s on the season.

The Birmingham, Ala., native has been ranked No. 1 in the nation much of the season and his 69.38 stroke average is the second lowest in the nation and the lowest in the SEC.

Johnson was also named SEC Golfer of the Week Feb. 25 after tying the third-lowest 54-hole score in school history at 14-under 66-68-68—202 at the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate as he won medalist honors for the second time this season and fourth of his career.

He is on the Haskins and Ben Hogan Award watch lists.

Auburn will play in the FarmLinks Match Play in Sylacauga, Ala., on Saturday and the Hootie at Bulls Bay in Awendaw, S.C., April 3-5 prior to playing in the SEC Championship in Sea Island, Ga., April 15-17.
