AUM hoops duo Jones, Carnley named NAIA Scholar-Athletes

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (aumathletics.com) —- Representing Auburn Montgomery were senior Spencer Jones and junior Jake Carnley, who were each named 2015-16 Daktronics-NAIA Men’s Basketball Scholar-Athletes for their efforts in the classroom. There were seven additional selections in the Southern States Athletic Conference.

Jones, a kinesiology major from Jasper, Ga., sports a 3.50 grade point average. He also was a two-time member of the Southern States Athletic Conference All-Academic team. On the court, he played in 17 games and started in 11. He averaged 5.8 points with 3 rebouds and made 20 three-pointers on the year. He had a season-high 19 points against Blue Mountain on Jan. 9, where he added six rebounds and a steal.

A native of Elba, Ala., Carnley sports a 3.51 grade point average, while majoring in special education. Swann also earned SSAC All-Academic team honors this season. Carnley appeared in 17 games for the Warhawks and started in four. He made 10 three-pointers on the year and shot 60 percent from the free-throw line. He scored a career-high nine points against Brewton-Parker on Feb. 25, where he finished 3-of-4 from the field and 2-of-3 from behind the arc.

Both players received the AUM Army ROTC Athletic Achievement Award, and led the Warhawks to a 17-13 record. The duo helped the team to its best record since the 26-7 showing from the 2008-09 team that advanced to the second round of the NAIA National Tournament.

In order to be nominated by an institution’s head coach or sports information director, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status to qualify for this honor.
