AUM softball splits in Hattiesburg, 23 game win streak halted

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (aumathletics.com) —- The top-ranked Auburn Montgomery softball team split Tuesday afternoon’s twin bill against No. 9 William Carey, winning the first game 1-0, before falling in the nightcap 5-4 in ten innings.

NOTES
• The Warhawks now stand at 25-2 (3-1) on the season.
• Mobile fell to 13-8 (1-1) overall.
• The loss snapped a 23-game win streak the team had accumulated since Feb. 13, where the team fell to NCAA Division II Trevecca Nazarene University

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Senior Katie Brinkman was the only Warhawk to pick up a hit in both games. She finished the first game 1-for-2, and added a 1-for-3 performance with a run scored in game two.
• Senior Jennifer Jenkins finished the second game 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
• Senior Kayla Hale finished the first game with a team-high two hits in three at bats.
• Senior Taylor Powell improved to 15-1 on the year, as she hurled a complete-game shutout in game one. She struck out 11 in the game, and only allowed four hits. Powell also came in late relief for game two in the bottom of the fifth. She tossed 5 2/3 innings and gave up only three hits and two runs with seven strikeouts and no walks.
• Tiffany DeVore led the way for William Carey finishing 2-for-4 in the second game with two RBIs.

GAME 1 HOW IT HAPPENED
• Neither team was able to score in the first inning.
• AUM scored its only run in the top of the second. Dishman led the inning off with a walk, and a Hale single to the wall advanced her to third. A passed ball scored Dishman to give AUM a 1-0 lead.
• Powell retired nine consecutive hitters before Williams doubled for William Carey. However, Powell struck out the next two batters to hold the 1-0 lead in AUM’s favor heading to the sixth.
• AUM had bases loaded with one out in the top of the seventh, but were unable to add an insurance run.
• William Carey had a base runner reach after being hit by a pitch, but Powell ended the game on a strikeout to hand AUM the 1-0 victory in game one.

GAME 2 HOW IT HAPPENED
• AUM once again got on the board first in the top of the third inning. Brinkman reached on a sacrifice bunt that was thrown away, and Nielsen came around to score. Henderson singled to advance Brinkman to third. Jenkins singled up the middle to score both runners, and gave AUM a 3-0 lead.
• William Carey responded in the bottom of the third. Nichols singled to center that scored Theriot to make the score 3-1 in favor of AUM.
• AUM was held scoreless in the fourth, but William Carey scored two runs in the bottom half of the frame. DeVore tripled to right-center that scored Gilbert. An error tied the game at 3-3.
• AUM added its final run of the game in the top of the fifth on a Jenkins triple to deep right field that scored Thomas, and gave the Warhawks a 4-3 lead.
• William Carey picked up the tying run in the bottom of the sixth on a DeVore double that plated Nette, and knotting the score at 4-4.
• At the end of seven innings, the score remained tied. The international tie-breaker rule took affect in the 10th inning. The Warhawks were unable to plate a run in the top half of the inning. William Carey used a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner to third, and with two outs Crow singled up the middle to score Theriot and gave William Carey the win in game two 5-4.

UP NEXT
• The Warhawks will return to action on Friday, March 25 when they travel to face Truett McConnell College for a doubleheader with the first game at 1 p.m.
