Tuskegee sweeps SIAC weekly baseball honors
ATLANTA, GA (goldentigersports.com) — The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference named the Pitcher and Player of the Week award winners Tuesday morning with Tuskegee University sweeping the honors. Ricky Green was named as the Player of the Week, while Joseph Mauldin was named Pitcher of the Week for their performances this weekend against Lane College.
Green finished the week hitting .643 in four games for Tuskegee, including picking up three extra base hits. The junior finished 9-for-14 last week with six runs scored, four runs batted in, a double and two triples. Green went 3-for-4 against Georgia Southwestern with a run and RBI. He finished the series against Lane collecting six hits (three extra base hits), including going 3-for-4 in the series finale with a pair of triples and two RBI. He went 2-for-3 in the series opener with a run and RBI while going 1-for-3 in the second game of the series. The junior raised his batting average over the week from .317 to .392.
Mauldin appeared in two games last week, recording a 1-1 record. For the week, the junior pitched nine innings (both starts), allowing six runs (five earned) off of 13 hits. He finished with 19 strikeouts as opposed to just four walks. After suffering the loss at Georgia Southwestern, Mauldin responded against Lane to finish off the sweep on Sunday. The junior pitched a complete game, scattering seven hits over seven innings where he tallied 17 strikeouts. Mauldin recorded all but four outs by strikeout which set a new conference high for strikeouts by an individual pitcher in a single game. The total number of strikeouts on Sunday is tied for the second highest this season across all three divisions of NCAA baseball.
Tuskegee (6-15, 4-2) returns to action on the road Wednesday afternoon against Selma University in a doubleheader. First pitch is set 12 noon in Selma.
