People in Bullock Couny are worried their prison may close after the state’s proposal to build four new prisons and getting rid of several others.
Several people stood on the steps of the Bullock County Courthouse Wednesday morning voicing their concerns on that proposal. They say there would be a huge loss of jobs for the area if the Bullock County Correctional Facility closed. Commission Chairman Ron Smith says it would have a harsh effect on the county’s economy.
“This has a economic-a potential for either economic devastation or economic jubilation so thats’s super important because its our lifeline,” says Smith.
According to the Alabama Department of Corrections, the Bullock County Correctional Facility opened in April of 1987. It currently houses more than 1,600 inmates.
