Former Montgomery County Sheriff D.T. Marshall died Tuesday night following a battle with cancer, according to Sheriff Derrick Cunningham. He was 65.
Marshall served Montgomery County for 16 years and retired in 2014. The Montgomery County Commission passed a resolution Monday to rename the sheriff’s office training center and firing range after Marshall.
D.T. Marshall was born in 1950 in Ft. Devens, Massachusetts. He and his family moved to Montgomery when he was 16.
He graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in 1968. After serving 8 years in the U.S. Army, Marshall joined the Montgomery Police Department in 1978 where led a distinguished career. In 1985, he was named the MPD officer of the year.
He later became the Commander of the Robbery-Homicide Unit of the Detective Division.
Marshall then ran for Montgomery county sheriff in 1998 and won. He was re-elected sheriff three more times.
Marshall then hung up his badge after 16 years as sheriff in 2015 and his chief Deputy, Derrick Cunningham was elected to replace him.
