LAKESIDE, Calif. (bamastatesports.com) – The Alabama State men’s golf team finished tied for seventh in the Barona Collegiate Cup Tournament, hosted by San Diego State.
The four-time defending SWAC champions, in their final tune-up for the league tournament April 18-20, finished tied for seventh with Princeton with a score of 902 (295-302-305), ahead of UC Riverside, Air Force, and Cal State-Bakersfield in the 11-team field at the Barona Creek Golf Club (par 72, 7,354 yards).
“The host school is a top 20 program, and their coach commended us for our competitiveness,” Alabama State head golf coach Dr. Gary Grandison said. “We will work harder to prep for postseason play.”
Branson Ferrier led Alabama State, finishing tied for third in shooting five-under par 211, shooting par or better in all three rounds during the 54-hole event. Ferrier followed his opening round four-under 68 with a one-under 71 and even par 72 in the final round in the field of 80 players.
Francis Berthiaume finished tied for 19th, shooting four-over par 220 (73-72-75), highlighted by an ace during the first day of competition.
Edd Hackett Jr. (230), Charles Griffin Jr. (244), and Mbongeni Maphosa Jr. (250) completed the scoring for Alabama State.
“We started well again, and led the tournament at the start before struggling as a unit,” Dr. Grandison said. “Branson contended again, while Francis had an ace and is coming around.”
